One of the early projects I worked on, built with WordPress featuring Custom Post Types, a multimedia slider, and support for multiple charity initiatives, including optional PayPal payment methods for supporters. The website was designed to reflect the scale and various facets of the charity, providing pages with specific functionality tailored to each aspect.

We developed a bespoke mega drop-down menu to visually guide users to different sections of the site. Custom Post Types were utilised as gateways to key pages, facilitating multiple blog sections.

Following design instructions from the branding consultant, we employed an incremental design approach, managing development across production, development, and staging environments.

One of the first events website projects I was involved in was for a member organisation of the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival.

The site was built as a custom WordPress theme, utilising Custom Post Types for event management and FullCalendar JS to create a structured "What's On" section.

The design featured bold theming with strong colour-coded sections and distinctive typography to effectively communicate the organisation's exciting programme of events to its audience.

An early bespoke WordPress theme designed for a cross-disciplinary project by a printmaker, poet, and political writer. The theme carefully showcases the exploration of the relationship between history, language, and the geosphere through the lens of oil, using thoughtful typography, layout design, and color schemes. Key features include a timeline for the Travelling Exhibition dates and easily navigable Resources and Reflection pages, all managed through the admin interface.

Significant attention was given to typography design to ensure content items were both clear and impactful. The design celebrated the work of carnival practitioners and organisations, highlighting their unifying bond and collective strength through carnival arts.

Technical functionality included a custom mega menu and slideshows, enhancing navigation and visual appeal.

Originally built as a WordPress custom theme, this site features an extensive database with a many-to-many architecture, handling relationships between authors, editors, translators, and books using Custom Post Types. The site was later reworked into a Headless WordPress setup, utilising GraphQL for the API and Next.js for the front-end.

I took great pleasure in re-purposing the existing database architecture, creating GraphQL query endpoints, and defining relationships. The front-end leverages cutting-edge technology and practices, elevating the single-page application (SPA) experience. This project involved considerable learning of server/client terminology and processes, resulting in a fully semantic, searchable metadata website.

The Node.js development and build-deploy flow process ensures system bugs are addressed before production. The application features component-based web pages - partial page rendering for enhanced page load performance. It includes static builds and on-demand page regeneration to prevent delays caused by heavy external resources and facilitates instant interaction with static components. Dynamic client-side features, such as forms with dynamically generated content, ensure a responsive user experience.

WordPress Webhooks were provided to communicate via cURL to front-end API endpoints, allowing for new content updates and triggering page revalidation of static page content.

One of the first e-commerce sites I worked on, featuring a custom WordPress theme built with Bootstrap’s grid system and WooCommerce.

I implemented a visually attractive and professional design as produced by the brand designer, which followed an iterative design and development process. Special attention was given to the brand’s identity, typography, and layout design.

The site required detailed product configurations, including weight-based sales options and comprehensive product health and nutritional information.

A very early static website built for a design partnership, hand-coded with minimal JavaScript to reflect a time when users often disabled it to avoid malicious browser behaviour. All interactions were achieved using CSS.

The project followed an iterative design process, led by Satpaul Bhamra, with a focus on typography and layout to align with the client's expertise, presenting a simple yet elegant catalogue of their jewellery and architectural design work.

In 2005, I began my journey into web coding when a friend built a static site for me. Initially, it was a simple HTML page listing class times and fees. Intrigued by how the site worked, I wanted to manage updates myself. Back then, this involved directly editing the code, which often led to layout issues and page crashes.

I encountered challenges such as losing work due to not saving documents or having backups. Despite these setbacks, my determination to learn and improve grew. I joined various web forums and was impressed by the community’s helpfulness. By following the best-practice advice shared by forum members, I implemented several improvements, including SEO strategies, HTML semantics, page load optimisation, content refinement, image optimisation, and security measures.

These efforts led to a well-performing website that adhered to W3C web standards. The site effectively served my needs, helping people find my classes and make bookings. It also caught the attention of a local design consultant, leading to my first paid web development projects. This website became an experimental project that laid the foundation for my web development career.

Soon after, I introduced PHP into my projects, expanding my knowledge of server-side environments, routing, and page templating. I learned how to create reusable code and efficiently include code across multiple parts of the site, reducing duplication.

Setting up a local LAMP stack environment on my PC proved invaluable for development work. It allowed me to run projects on virtual hosts locally, facilitating a more efficient and controlled development process.

As web development evolved, the need for content management systems (CMS) became apparent. To advance my career, I sought private tuition and attended evening classes at City Lit, focusing on JavaScript, PHP, object-oriented PHP, and MySQL. This formal education deepened my understanding and skills in web development.

A custom responsive WordPress theme was developed for a Poetry festival featuring well-known and celebrate poets, organised by Michael Horovitz, a visual artist and translator influential in the UK's Beat Poetry scene.

The theme emphasises fine typography any attention to layout design to showcase the festival's artistic nature. A custom navigation system with elegant page signposting was implemented using CSS and JavaScript.

A bespoke CMS and database system for a new cycle delivery web shopping platform.

The scheme aims to strengthen the local economy. This platform includes integrated delivery, SMS, and email notifications, providing updates on the progress of each delivery.

The system utilizes the CycleStreets RESTful API to gather delivery stats, such as CO2 savings, calories burned, distance, and time to deliver. Traders have their own front page and admin interface for managing orders, invoices, product inventory, and setting opening times and available delivery slots.

Customers benefit from features like multi-shop single checkout, delivery slot selection, and the ability to view order history and reorder previous purchases. They can search by trader, category, or brand and sort products alphabetically or by price. The delivery admin interface offers tools for managing orders, tracking order history, and updating the system at each stage of the delivery process.

As a Progressive Web App (PWA), Streetrunner can be installed on devices and accessed without the need for a browser or app store. This all-in-one solution offers significant benefits to the platform owner.

Website for the much loved and well-known Meanwhile Gardens. The site accommodates various user groups, including a children's play hut, a skateboard park, a Steel Pan group, and a mental health charity; each having dedicated web page templates.

The "What's On" page displays events integrating with FullCalendar JS and is managed through the site’s admin interface, supporting various recurring event options.

The font-end is component based built with a JAMstack architecture, utilising a MySQL database, Strapi for admin management, and Next.js for the front end. I created a donations component designed to engage visitors easily step-by-step to donate to garden projects utilising React and Next.js enabling asynchronous dynamic page loading.

The back-end runs off a structured database with relationships between Events, Places, and Admin users, allowing dynamic generation of location-specific event details and contact information.

To enhance functionality, I integrated Leaflet JS, an open-source mapping library and API, to create an interactive map. This map features markers and polygons outlining the garden's areas based on geo-location boundaries, making it easy for users to navigate the garden’s features.

I developed an icon-based slider that offers a quick insight into the garden’s key aspects, such as usage, ecology, and interesting facts. This feature uses symbol design, a common practice in mobile interfaces, for intuitive information sign-posting.

Website for a Film Production Company specialising in documentaries for major UK and international broadcasters. The site features a full-screen image landing page with an SVG animated logo that plays on the initial page visit.

The company's work is showcased with a strong image-based theme and responsive design, utilising AJAX for seamless loading of films. The back-end includes a relational database that organises episodes, production team members, and genres.

The site also features a custom CMS tailored to the client's specific needs, with additional features added or built on demand.

Bespoke redesign of an in-browser E-POS till system, operating as a single-page application. Originally developed for a restaurant bar, it was customised for use in a fast-paced kiosk environment serving hot drinks and lunchtime meals. The system supports multiple tills and locations, efficiently managing stock control across various sites.

The E-POS system combines the functionality of a physical till with the advantages of a remote-hosted digital solution. It includes features such as modals for special functions (discounts, overrides, email and print receipt history, customer management), and can handle any number of operators, each with their own session on the same device.

Thorough testing ensured accurate processing of key procedures including sum totals, change, tickets, and receipts. The custom admin system integrates with Xero accounting, provides inventory control, and generates various sales reports.

I worked with the client to create a bespoke blogging site tailored for a published author and media article writer.

The site features a robust blog post comments database architecture and stylishly organises topics into genres with a sleek presentation that emphasises typography, aligning with the writer's area of expertise. Content is organised into Reviews and Articles, with subcategories for detailed navigation.

CSS flexbox was utilised to achieve a masonry layout for the category list items. Leaflet map markers are activated and made visible through user interaction on the web page.

The custom theme is built using Bootstrap's grid system to ensure responsive design across devices. The site is powered by a bespoke CMS, which includes functionality for managing map place markers and an interface for adding and replying to post comments.

I developed a local community mapping tool to assist in identifying and managing potential greening areas for a new Friends of The Earth post-code gardener project.

The mapping tool utilises the Leaflet JS RESTful API to add map locations and retrieves geo-coordinates and ward statistics from local government datasets and the Mayor of London's open data using cURL. These details are automatically applied to form fields when setting the marker position.

The web application is built as a Progressive Web App (PWA), functioning as a single-page app to provide a native app-like experience. It features admin authentication for updating or deleting map locations.

The defined area of the project is shown on the map with ward outlines using map polygons and overlay colours for clarity. Places are also presented in a list format, categorised into ownership, current use, and potential. Content is uploaded via a Next.js form using server actions, with images taken from handheld devices or uploaded from device folders.

Migrated from WordPress.com to a custom CMS with a Next.js front-end, featuring a custom admin interface for managing events and mass mailing. The migration ensured zero loss of content, including pages, events, and images, with domain redirects from the old site to the new one.

Server-Side Rendering (SSR) was employed at the page component level to enhance modular page loading, optimise performance, and improve SEO. Static Site Generation (SSG) generates static HTML at build time for faster page loads. Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) uses webhooks from the custom CMS to update static content on the front-end. TypeScript is adopted throughout the site for improved type safety.

API integration provides endpoints for TFL travel updates on the "Find Us" page. A search component modal displays results for events and page content.

The custom admin features an events calendar with support for various recurring patterns, using FullCalendar JS for dynamic front-end rendering. Automated social media banner image generation ensures correct dimensions for metadata content sharing. The mass mail system includes theme templating, GMAIL SEND API integration, authentication, and server cron job operations for scheduled sending.

The front-end features multiple views for events, including grid views and a full calendar archive, as well as engaging components like slides, mini-intro sections, and a donate component. Asynchronous updates for subscribe and contact forms are implemented with minimal resource dependency for user authentication.

Achieved 100% scores in Lighthouse reports for performance and usability.

I developed a custom CMS for a Personal Media Portfolio, providing an easy-to-use interface to manage media from platforms like SoundCloud, YouTube, and Vimeo.
